The Kind of Want That Burns
He Watches Like a Promise
I felt him before I saw him. That’s how it always starts with us: a heat at the back of my neck, the slow, deliberate weight of a gaze that doesn’t wander. I was at the rooftop bar in that black dress he likes too much, the one that makes my spine feel like an invitation, and I knew—without turning—that he had already mapped every man in the room who looked at me longer than a second.
It should have irritated me. A woman like me doesn’t need a keeper. I like the way I walk into a place and take it. But the truth, the one I only admit when my pulse is already misbehaving, is that I like being hunted by someone who already has me. Devotion with teeth. Obsession with a pulse. He doesn’t hover. He waits. And waiting, on him, looks like hunger wearing a very expensive shirt.
The Line He Won't Let Anyone Cross
The guy at the bar didn’t get the memo. Hand too low on my back, laugh too close to my mouth, the kind of confidence that assumes a smile is a yes. I had already started to slide away when the air changed.
He didn’t raise his voice. He never does. He just appeared at my shoulder like he’d been carved out of the dark, and the hand on my waist vanished as if it had been burned. I heard the words anyway—low, almost polite, the kind of quiet that makes a room lean in. Mine. Not a question. Not a request. A fact he was willing to defend with whatever it took.
The other man left. Fast. And I should have scolded him for the caveman routine. Instead I was wet-heat and heartbeat, standing there with my drink forgotten, thinking: God, keep looking at me like that. Keep being this much.
How Obsession Feels on Skin
We didn’t go back to the party. He steered me into the service hallway like he owned the building, and maybe in that moment he did. Cool concrete at my shoulders. His jacket shrugged around me without asking. His palm found the side of my throat—not squeezing, just resting there, feeling the traitor rhythm of my pulse like it belonged to him.
“I don’t share what’s mine,” he said against my temple, and the words went through me hotter than any mouth on my skin. I could smell his cologne and the night and the faint metallic edge of how close he’d come to making a scene. My fingers hooked in his belt. Not pulling. Just holding on. The space between our bodies was a dare neither of us had cashed yet.
I told him I could have handled it. He told me he knows. That this isn’t about whether I can. It’s about the fact that he will. Every time. Without being asked. The line between devotion and obsession is supposed to scare a smart woman. Standing there with his thumb tracing my lower lip like he was memorizing the shape of it, I didn’t feel scared. I felt chosen. Fiercely. Excessively. Like the whole city could burn and he’d still be in front of me.
The Inch He Hasn't Taken Yet
His forehead touched mine. His breath was unsteady for the first time all night, and that—that—undid me more than the protectiveness. Want, finally showing its throat. I arched just enough that my chest brushed his, a slow, wicked reminder of what I was offering if he ever decided to stop being a gentleman about it.
“If you keep guarding me like that,” I whispered, lips almost on his, “I’m going to start needing it. Worse than I already do.”
He smiled. Small. Dangerous. The kind of smile that says he heard the invitation and is going to make me wait for it anyway. His hand slid from my throat to the open V of my dress, stopping exactly where restraint still lived. One more inch and this hallway would have become a confession neither of us could take back.
He didn’t take it.
He just looked at me like I was the only thing in the world worth ruining himself for, and I stood there aching, claimed, deliciously unfinished—already counting the seconds until he decided that almost was no longer enough.
