He showed up like the years had been a rumor and my pulse had been waiting for the punchline. I should have shut the door. I opened it wider instead — same mouth, same hunger, same unfinished heat.

Almost three, rain on the glass, one lamp left on. Months of pretending sat between us like heat. I said his name the way I never had. He said mine back. Neither of us reached for the door.
He looked at me like he’d already decided something I hadn’t agreed to yet. The rain didn’t wash that look away. Nothing would. I should have walked. I didn’t.

He was already there when the rain turned vicious — dark coat, quieter than the street, looking at me like the night had been waiting for my mistake. I should have walked the other way. I stepped closer instead.
Three years of pretending I was over him, and then he said my name like it still belonged in his mouth. I went anyway. I always was going to.
He never asked if I wanted to be protected. He simply decided the world was a threat and I was the only thing in it worth keeping. I should have been afraid of how much he wanted me. Instead I leaned into his hands and let the heat take me apart.
I told myself I would never be that girl — the one who looks at her best friend's ex and feels her whole body change temperature. Then he stood too close in a kitchen that was not ours, and every rule I had ever made started to burn from the inside out.
He belonged to my best friend once. That should have been the end of it. Instead I spent one rain-soaked night learning how thin a rule can feel when the wrong man is standing close enough to steal the air from my lungs.
He was standing where the rain should have been empty, watching me like he already knew the ending. I felt the danger before I felt the want. Then I felt both at once, and I didn't step back.

Seven years. Two cities. One unfinished night. Then he showed up at my door like my pulse had been waiting for him the whole time.
We’d been dancing around it for weeks. Then the night got late, the lights got low, and I finally told him I wanted his hands on me — and he told me he’d been dying to.
Some men love you quietly. He loves me like a warning—and I have never felt safer, or more ruinously desired, in my entire life.
