The Heat We Never Buried
He Still Knew How to Look at Me
I opened the door in a silk robe I hadn't bothered to tie properly, because some reckless part of me already knew it was him. Time had made him sharper, meaner around the mouth—but those eyes still dragged over me like they owned the right.
"Maya." Just my name. Low. Hungry. Like he hadn't spent half a decade pretending we were finished.
Old Bruises, Same Hands
We didn't start with sorry. We started with the truth we'd both been too proud to swallow. I told him I'd hated how easy it looked when he walked away. He told me I'd made staying feel like drowning and breathing in the same breath.
His jaw flexed. My fingers ached to trace it. Same fight. Same heat. Neither of us had gotten over a damn thing—and we both knew it.
Closer Than Forgiveness
He stepped in. The door clicked shut behind him and the air went thin, electric. His hand found my waist like it had never forgotten the map of me, thumb sliding just under the silk, warm skin to warmer skin.
I could smell him—rain and something darker that used to live on my sheets. My breath caught. I hated how badly I wanted his mouth. I wanted it more than I wanted to be right.
His forehead almost touched mine. Almost. His voice scraped out, rough: "Tell me to go, Maya. Say it like you mean it this time."
I didn't. I tipped my chin up instead, lips a single stolen breath from his, pulse loud enough to drown the past. The night hung there—unfinished, burning, ours if we were stupid enough to take it.
And God help me… I was already leaning in.
